When I first decided I needed to know how to cook ETC. I decided that the best thing I can do was look into places where I could learn those skills.
I researched a few places and I asked questions of people who went there. I researched all of the NFB centers but decided that I wanted something that was more flexible to my needs.
One day I was talking to a friend on skype and she recommended Alphapointe. “Alphapointe? What’s Alphapointe? I asked her. She explained to me that Alphapointe was a place in Kansas City Missouri that teaches blind and visually impaired skills they need to live independently. “You’ll love it!” she said. I said, “tell me more!” so she did!
After we hung up she sent me their website and I immediately began looking into what they had to offer. I asked my rehab services for the blind counselor if I could apply and he said I could. *squeal of excitement*. But then my mom died and I decided to hold off of applying.
So It’s the next February and I decide to ask again… and again get a yes. *second squeal of excitement* Then, in
April my dad dies (I can’t catch a break here). So I decide to hold off of applying for a second time.
Okay so Now it’s January of this year. I ask for and get a yes for a third time. *even bigger squeal of excitement* because I’m determined to go this time. Nobody better die on me this time! I ask for and get the forms to fill out. I have to choose the place or places I would like to attend then answer some questions. Once the forms are all filled out I mail them back then I wait for my counselor to do his thing.
I’m not sure how long him doing his thing actually takes but eventually he sends a document through email for me to finish filling out. In this document I have to list my job-related goals and the skills that I want to learn while I’m there and make sure all the other information is correct. Then I have to email it to a lady at Alphapointe. Now I wait!
A couple of months go by and I hear nothing so I email my counselor to see if there’s anything I need to do. Eventually I get a reply that there isn’t and there’s stuff he has to do. So I wait some more.
At last I get a call from someone at Alphapointe that says I’m excepted and they want to schedule my 3 week evaluation. (I missed the first call because I was outside without my phone) and had to call her back.
So by the time you read this I will be starting my first day at Alphapointe. After my 3 week evaluation I’m not sure how long I’ll be there. Sean and Faith will be in charge while I’m gone so hopefully one of them will check all of our social media and our email. If you would like to look into Alphapointe for yourself: visit their website. Thanks for reading!
